Using some simple guidelines when choosing bathroom fixtures for commercial applications will help you wade through the plethora of available options and determine the right decision when the time comes to choose fixtures for new or remodeled facilities. Determining which type of toilet paper dispenser is best for a particular commercial setting before purchasing fixtures will save time and money by eliminating costly and time-consuming returns and exchanges.

There are many strange and unusual concepts for toilet paper holders, but not all ideas are going to be appropriate for commercial settings.

The two main types of installations are recessed and surface mount. In locations with multiple toilet compartments, a third possibility is a two-sided fixture that will reduce the number of fixtures to be purchased and the time and effort required for installation.

The primary advantage of a recessed toilet paper dispenser is the amount of clearance required. This is especially important if the toilet compartment is particularly small or tightly designed. Recessed fixtures will also create a more streamlined look and feel in the toilet compartment. Checking the technical data sheet for each fixture prior to purchase will provide the information to determine the necessary clearance.

A secondary consideration is the type of wall material where the dispenser will be installed. If the wall on which the dispenser is to be mounted is tiled or made of metal, brick, or stone, a recessed installation could prove more difficult and costly.

If the wall is drywall, either a surface mount or recessed fixture can be used. The main consideration for installation of a recessed fixture is ensuring that the chosen fixture will fit horizontally between two studs, which will also ease the installation process

A surface-mounted fixture may be a better choice for other wall types. While slightly more clearance is needed for this type of fixture the ease of installation should make up for this slight disadvantage.

Another consideration is whether a single roll dispenser is most appropriate or if a multiple roll toilet paper dispenser is a better option. In settings where the facilities are not used frequently a single roll dispenser should be all that is required. In busier commercial settings a multiple roll dispenser will reduce the need for frequent changes and increase availability of tissue at times when staff is particularly busy. If a multi-roll or jumbo-roll dispenser is chosen, care will be required to ensure that it will fit in the desired location.

The type of toilet paper roll desired will also help determine which fixture type is optimal. A jumbo commercial roll will last longer and require fewer changes but isn’t as easy to change or store. These rolls will also need to be ordered from a commercial paper supplier. A dispenser that holds a standard-core roll will permit the purchase of additional rolls almost anywhere if proper inventory isn’t maintained and supply runs out unexpectedly.

Whether a secured fixture is needed is another pertinent consideration. If theft of toilet tissue is a potential concern, a toilet paper dispenser with a locking cabinet or vandal-resistant spindle will likely be the best selection.

Finally, the type of finish on the other fixtures in the toilet compartment will determine what finish is selected. Both satin stainless steel and bright-polished chrome finishes are attractive, but to keep the overall look of the compartment sleek it’s important to be consistent when choosing finishes.

Taking these factors into consideration when purchasing new toilet paper dispensers for commercial applications should help inform the correct choice from the beginning, saving valuable time, money, and effort up front and freeing up resources for numerous other decisions that must be made during toilet compartment installations and remodels.
