Why Don’t Paper Towel Dispensers Give Enough Paper?

Everybody who uses the bathroom needs to wash their hands. This is the day and age where people don’t want to spread germs, and since hand dryers are known for being less sanitary what better way than to dry your hands off with paper towels? But whenever you go use the restroom, particularly in a public place, you find that whenever you need to dry your hands after washing there is just not enough paper that comes out of the paper towel dispenser. No matter how frantically you wave your hands in front of the motion sensor, it dispenses towels at a seemingly glacial pace. Why is this?

There could be any number of reasons why automatic paper towel dispensers do not give enough paper. Some of the reasons may be logical and some may be a little illogical, but this is little comfort when you are in a rush to dry your hands and get back to your life. I know that when I dry my hands off after washing at a restaurant, I just wave my hand in front of the automatic dispenser of the paper towels and a small fraction of what I need appears. What happens next is that I have to continually wave my hand in front of the motion sensor and try to get more paper towel to come out. Now this happens to be an inconvenient thing when you’re trying to get back into the restaurant with your family and finish your meal but it seems and this is a part of daily life.

It appears that the electronic motor inside the dispenser does not want to give more than a smidge of a paper towel at a time. This is an inconvenience for all of us that need extra paper towels to dry your hands. Is the electric motor to blame? It very well may be, therefore, we have to blame the manufacturer of the motor. But is there an underlying issue with that?

In the environmentalist view, there is way too much paper usage out there. According to the environmentalists this is just a bunch of waste. It is estimated by waste managers that paper towels account for almost 40% of waste by volume from either an office building or dormitory. So, where does the blame really lie?

The environmentalists raise a lot of concerns about how many paper towels are being used from dispensers, therefore depleting the number of trees. How Do Automatic Paper Towel Dispensers Work?

The automatic paper towel dispenser is a modern invention that offers an advanced method of dispensing paper towels. A predetermined length of paper towel is dispensed when you place your hands near the sensor. The dispensing of paper towel stops when a hand is removed and when there is ambient lighting available. Automatic paper towel dispensers are powered by electricity from a plug-in wall outlet. Paper towels are dispensed using a touchless switch and motor. The electronic source is made up of an array of photovoltaic cells. The cells energize a control circuitry that controls how the dispenser works by acting in response to a sensor that detects movement and dispenses paper towels.

The side walls comprise of a roll support cup and a roll support arm located opposite each other, forming the main roll station. The paper towel is then filled in the cabinet to the support cup then to the support arm respectively. Afterwards, a length of paper towel is threaded behind the transfer bar. The transfer bar is made up of a folk, cam, and overdrive roller. This enables the paper towel to be pulled in a downward motion, between the pinch roller and drive roller that is rotated by a motor. The length of paper towel being dispensed can be set to any desired length, mostly between 10-12 inches of paper towel with each cycle.

When the main roll is relatively depleted to about a 4-inch diameter, it is shown by the low paper indicator. An attendant then opens the dispenser cover and the main roll is then moved to the stub roll station. When the main roll of paper towel is moved to the stub roll, it allows new main roll paper towels to be filled on the roll support cup and roll support arm. Once the stub roll is finished, then the main roll begins putting paper towel between the pinch roller and drive roller to the outside of the dispenser.

How to Install Bathroom Grab Bars

To install the safety bars, the person doing the project needs to make sure that they have all of the necessary tools for the job.

Today, grab bars are no longer always required to be mounted between two wall studs. Newer mounting system allow the bars to be mounted anywhere without the need for a wall stud support. They can even be mounted on tile. For the proper installation of this safety feature, start by assembling all of the tools needed. Include some masking tape, a pencil, caulking, tile and glass bits, and assorted sized screws along with the electric drill and bar. The next step is to determine where the bar will be located. This will vary depending on who will be using it. If using the stud in the wall method is chosen, find two studs where the bar will fit between in the preferred location. Use the pencil to mark the location once the studs have been found. If there is difficulty, use a stud finder. For the 16 inch studs, a 24 inch bar should be a perfect fit. Most bars are placed at an angle between the studs.

Using a glass and tile bit, it is now time to pre-drill the pilot holes. The anchor will suggest the right sized hole to drill. Most bars use the 1/8 inch hole at the mark that is closest to the center of the stud. Once the hole has been made through the tile, and it is time to make the hole through the wood, change the bit to a wood or metal bit. It is now time to install the wall anchors. These are generally plastic wedges that can be hammered into the hole so that the screws will have something to grip. The screws are ready to slide the bar onto and into the wall and tightened up. It is vital to follow the instructions that come with the bar package to ensure that everything has been done properly.

How to Open A Toilet Paper Dispenser

However, the problem with a commercial toilet paper dispenser is that it can be quite confusing and somewhat of a hassle to open so that you can put in a new roll. Below is a step by step guide to how you can open the dispenser and change out the rolls in no time.

Step 1: look on top of the dispenser for a key latch


Most dispensers have a keyhole on them. If it is a plastic dispenser, the key slot is more than likely found on the very top and if it is a metal dispenser than it is probably located either on the top or in the middle of the dispenser.
The plastic dispensers have a plastic key that you will press into the hole which releases the latch so it opens up. If it is a metal dispenser, there will be a more traditional key that you can use to open up the dispenser.

Step 2: open up the dispenser


In the average Bobrick toilet paper dispenser, once you get the key and press down, it will release a hatch that will allow the front of the dispenser to hinge down towards you. During this step, it is important to make sure that you hold onto the face of the dispenser as it comes to you or it can fall open too fast. Opening it too fast could also cause the toilet paper to fall right out.

Step 3: change out the toilet paper roll


Once you have opened up the dispenser, you can reach in and throw away the empty roll and replace it with one or two full rolls. Make sure that the start of the roll is facing down so that the person using it next is able to reach in there and grab it easily. Once the rolls are out in place, you will then grab the face of the dispenser that you previously let down, and push it back up. Make sure you push it up firmly until you hear a click. You will then hold it closed with one hand and use the other hand to insert the key again and lock it back. You will know that it is locked if you hear it click again.

Step 4: What to do if there is no place to insert the key


There may not always be a key or a place to put the key which can present a problem if you do not know how else to open it. If this is the case, what you will do is place your hand on the bottom of the toilet paper dispenser. Once you do this, you will search for a little latch that is underneath there, similar to those that you would find on the bottom of the dispenser. Once you locate the latch, gently pull it toward you and the face of the dispenser will come to you, and you will repeat every other step as normal.
